What is wrong with beer when it foams so much that you end up with less than an inch of liquid in the mug?

I carefully poured cold beer from the bottle into a clean, cold glass mug like I always do and it foamed like crazy, there was about 1/2 inch of liquid and foam overflowing a mug that should hold 500ml. The next time we made 100% sure that the mugs were clean and every bottle in the six pack did the same. What was wrong with that beer?
It would have been nice if most of you people didn't just assume that I did something wrong. It would have been nice if someone had at least given me the benefit of the doubt and assumed that I have successfully poured beer into a glass before the foam incident. I was hoping for a technical answer. We always pour cold beer into a cold glass and we've never seen foaming like that before.
